My hypothesis: this phenomenon is not just a feeling; it is a measurable consequence of how our brains perceive time. A year is not a fixed unit of experience but a relative one, its perceived duration shrinking in proportion to the total time we have lived.
This concept always puzzled me, and it kept me awake at 3:00 am for more times than I can remember, but I never had the mathematical rigor or inclination to try to model it properly. This until today, when I decided to delegate the math to my LLM interns, and what you are going to see next are the results of this exploration.
This article is a personal, technical exploration of this idea. My goal was to move beyond the abstract feeling and build a simple mathematical model to quantify this perceived acceleration of time. The journey led to a clear, and thought-provoking, conclusion about the structure of our lives and the profound significance of our earliest experiences.
Context-Setting: A Simple Model#
To model the perceived passage of time, we can start with a straightforward relationship: the perceived value of any given year is inversely proportional to our age. In mathematical terms, the value of one year can be represented as 1/age

Naturally, if you live a longer life, the halfway point would move accordingly, but given the logaritmic nature of this model, not by much. For example, a lifespan of 100 years woud result in a halfway point at 10 years old.
The Journey: Calculating and Visualizing Perceived Time#
First Attempt: A Simple Summation#
To explore the implications of this model, my first step was to write a Python script that calculated the perceptual mid-point by summing the discrete value of each year (1/age

The script produced a specific result: for an 81-year lifespan, the perceptual mid-point occurred at age 7.
However, this result presented a problem. It was close to the mathematical model’s prediction of age 9, but a 22% error was too significant to ignore. The discrepancy arises because a simple annual summation is a coarse approximation of the smooth, continuous curve described by the integral. The first term, where age=1
, has an outsized impact, skewing the entire calculation.
Second Attempt: A Refined Model#
To create a more accurate simulation, I refined the script to use monthly time steps. By summing the perceived value of each month ((1/12)/age_in_months

This new script produced a result that aligned closely with the mathematical model: the calculated perceptual mid-point is age 8.8.
This iterative process of modeling and refinement is a core part of technical work. The initial, flawed result was not a failure but a necessary step that exposed a deeper truth about the model, leading to a more robust and accurate conclusion.
Parallels in Neurodevelopment#
The conclusion that our perception of life is front-loaded is not just a mathematical curiosity; it aligns with foundational concepts in neurodevelopmental biology. The brain’s capacity for learning and adaptation is at its highest in early life, during what are known as critical periods.
During childhood and adolescence, the brain undergoes a process of synaptic pruning, where unused neural connections are eliminated, and frequently used connections are strengthened. Model Limitations#
